The Blue Lagoon rewards a little planning more than most beaches. Time it well and pack right, and you get the postcard. Turn up unprepared at noon in August, and you get sunburn and a scramble for space. Here's how to get it right.

The best time to visit

Season: the sea is comfortably warm from about May to October. July and August are hottest and by far the busiest. May, June, September and early October hit the sweet spot — warm water, kinder prices, fewer people.

Time of day: the lagoon is calmest and clearest early. Aim for the first boats, or flip to an evening cruise. Midday in peak summer is the worst of both crowds and heat.

Visiting with kids

The shallow, sheltered water is excellent for children and non-swimmers. The challenges are heat, sun and limited shade, plus a rocky entry in places. Bring water shoes, plenty of sunscreen, a shade solution and snacks. An early start avoids meltdowns in the midday sun. A private charter gives families a shaded base and a toilet on board.

Photography tips

For the shotFor a crowd-free photo of the famous water, you almost have to be there at sunrise or on an early boat. By 10am in summer, empty-lagoon shots are essentially impossible.

Yes — the shallow, calm water is ideal for children and non-swimmers. Plan for heat and limited shade with water shoes, sunscreen, a shade solution, snacks and an early start.
