"Is the Blue Lagoon worth it?" The honest answer: the water is world-class, but in peak summer the crowds are real. If that's a dealbreaker, don't write off Malta's turquoise coast — just point yourself at somewhere quieter. Here are six alternatives, and three ways to enjoy the Blue Lagoon itself without the scrum.
Right next to the Blue Lagoon but boat-access only, deeper and calmer. The easiest "upgrade". See the caves & Crystal Lagoon guide.
A short walk from the lagoon, with sand, pine shade and a fraction of the crowd. Covered in our Comino guide.
A dramatic narrow inlet between cliffs — tiny, striking and far off the mass-tourism track.
A red-sand bay on Malta's west coast, popular with locals and calmer than the headline beaches.
A steep walk down keeps numbers low at this pocket-sized red-sand cove.
Gozo's big red-sand beach — spacious enough to absorb a crowd without feeling packed.
| Spot | Island | Vibe | Access |
|---|---|---|---|
| Crystal Lagoon | Comino | Deep, dramatic | Boat only |
| Santa Marija Bay | Comino | Sandy, shaded | Boat + walk |
| Wied il-Għasri | Gozo | Narrow cliff inlet | Car + steps |
| Ġnejna Bay | Malta | Local, relaxed | Car/bus |
| San Blas Bay | Gozo | Secluded cove | Car + steep walk |
| Ramla Bay | Gozo | Big red-sand beach | Car/bus |
You don't have to skip the lagoon — just outsmart the crowd:
The Blue Lagoon's water genuinely is special — few places in the Mediterranean match that shallow, luminous turquoise. The question is only what you'll trade for it. If you can flex your timing (dawn, dusk, or shoulder season), take the lagoon itself and beat the crowd. If your only slot is a midday summer visit and crowds ruin your day, pivot to the Crystal Lagoon or Santa Marija Bay next door, or a red-sand Gozo bay like Ramla — you'll swim in beautiful water with room to breathe.
Many boat trips already hit two or three of these spots in a day, so you rarely have to choose just one. A cruise that includes the Blue Lagoon, the Crystal Lagoon and the sea caves lets you sample the famous water and then slip somewhere quieter when it gets busy — the best of both.
